Speech Pathology Australia

Seven blues down to five. One campaign, three phases. A peak body that finally sounds like it's listening.

Speech Pathology Australia is the national peak body for the speech pathology profession, representing more than 15,000 members across the country. When a national member consultation revealed a growing gap between the association and the practitioners it serves, SPA brought JTB Studios in to build a campaign that could close it, not with another announcement, but with an ongoing conversation members could actually see playing out.

The challenge

The consultation was clear on one point: members respected SPA’s authority, but didn’t feel partnered by it. They wanted practical, day to day value, clearer communication, stronger advocacy, and confidence in the future of their profession. A single campaign moment wouldn’t fix that. SPA needed visible activity before the end of the year, but the sentiment issues ran deeper than a website update could solve, and genuine trust only rebuilds with ongoing proof of action, not a one-off statement. The real task was building a campaign structure patient enough to carry that proof over months, while still giving SPA something to show members straight away.

The approach

We built the response around a phased campaign, not a single push. Three phases, each with its own tone and job to do: We’re changing opened with real member quotes overlaid on member portraits, honest and humble, acknowledging what SPA had heard before asking to be heard back. In practice followed with proof, showing the professional development, communication and advocacy changes those quotes had actually driven. Together closed the loop, reinforcing that this was a partnership members were shaping, not a project being done to them. That structure let SPA show quick wins immediately while building toward the deeper, slower work of shifting how members felt about the organisation.

Two creative territories were developed to carry this: Partnership in practice, which used time itself as the storytelling device (a speech pathologist’s first session through to their thousandth), and Listening and evolution, the direct “We heard you” territory that SPA ultimately ran with. Both were built to avoid the trap most member campaigns fall into, talking at people instead of with them.

Execution ran across every channel members actually use. Instagram and LinkedIn ran the member quotes as native carousels and stories, EDMs walked subscribed members through what had actually changed month to month, and internal comms were sequenced first, so SPA’s own staff and branches understood and could speak to the shift before it went external.

Underpinning all of it was a quieter piece of work: a visual and verbal identity refresh, a warmer colour palette, a new typographic pairing, and a bespoke brand device built from the phonetic structure of speech, so the campaign had a distinctive visual language to run on rather than borrowing generic healthcare-sector cues.

The outcome

Phase one launched on schedule, giving SPA a working, three-phase framework for showing members change instead of just announcing it. The acknowledge, evidence, unify structure meant SPA could keep proving action over time rather than relying on a single moment to shift sentiment, exactly the kind of sustained, visible proof the original consultation had shown was missing. SPA came out of the engagement with a distinctive brand foundation and a campaign architecture built to keep the conversation with its members going.
