What do you need for a great SEO presence?
So you’ve heard of SEO (search engine optimisation) and how important it is for websites to have but just how do you get a great ranking yourself? A great SEO presence can help potential customers find your business easily on a Google results page. Here are a few simple ways to help you stand out from the crowd.
1. High quality and relevant content
When people type a query into Google, they’re looking for results that match their search as closely as possible. For example, if you type “bakery” into Google, you want to see results that tell you about bakeries.
But, your website should have content that matches what people would type into a search engine if they were looking for your business. So, if you run a bakery but your website has no mention of anything resembling bread or a bakery, search engines won’t show your business when people look for bakeries.
That doesn’t mean that you should go wild with keyword plugging though. Keep in mind that it’s not enough just to have the right words. The content you produce on your website should also provide value to your visitors. Repeating the word “bakery” 100 times is seen as irrelevant content and can actually hurt your presence. A well-thought out piece on the importance of bakeries, on the other hand, will rank higher because it’s more interesting and therefore, more likely to be read.
Search engines aim to give the user the most relevant and useful results so make sure you’re writing content that your audience will find interesting and helpful.
2. Good user experience
Search engines favour websites that offer users a good experience. That means the website loads quickly, the layout is clear and you can find the content you are looking for.
Check your website with the following questions in mind:
- Is the speed quick enough?
- Can you find the information you want easily?
- Does your website have links that aren’t working?
If you’re not having fun looking around your own website, it’s likely that you’re giving your users a bad experience too. Creating a user-friendly website invites people to spend longer on your site and is ranked higher by Google in a search results page.
3. Have a mobile-friendly website
Don’t miss out on a huge audience and make sure your site is accessible on mobile as well as on computers. Websites with mobile-friendly versions will rank higher than those that don’t, because they’re more user-friendly and versatile.
More and more people are accessing websites on the go – it’s a trend that is growing as people spend more time on their mobile devices than their laptops or computers. Search engines have picked up on this and are looking to rank websites that are not only optimised for computers, but have also been adjusted for viewing on mobile devices.
